.NET is Microsoft's "software platform" for the developing networked computing environmnet. It's goal is to provide a language-neutral environment in which developers can develop systems which easily and securely interoperate. In addtion to this enviroment the .NET label is also afforded to a number of applications, servers and notably specific services built with the .NET toolkit.
All these pieces together make up the .NET Framework.
