Full Description
This course is designed for the working or aspiring writer who wants to create exciting and believable science fiction. The course gives you a jumpstart on getting ideas, building worlds, developing characters, plotting, and getting published. Worksheets, a web-based library of resources, book recommendations and examples from published science fiction guide you through the process of developing a workable story idea and getting your work published.


Outcomes:
Students will learn to:
1) Find ideas for science fiction stories
2) Turn “an idea” into a working story
3) Build believable characters
4) Build a science fiction world
5) Manage the business and creative aspects of the writer’s life
6) Identify possible publishing opportunities
7) Submit manuscripts


Assessment:
Students demonstrate knowledge by developing a journal that includes:
1) A basic idea
2) A list of characters
3) A plot outline
4) A basic layout and description of the story’s world
5) A writing schedule
6) A list of possible publishers
7) A “pitch” sentence
