Outcomes Students will learn how to: 1.)Approach their regional or a major newspaper to work as a correspondent 2.) Learn what it entails to be a correspondent 3.) How to present themselves professionally with clips and credits and interviews. Assessment Students demonstrate their knowledge: 1.) By soliciting one or more papers for employment 2.) Being hired or receiving an interview 3.) Providing work that demonstrates their writing and reporting capabilities. Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5 Students are introduced to the fundamentals of being a correspondent. Details emphasized are how to approach an editor, get an interview, prepare a professional resume and portfollio. Students are encouraged to utilize their knowledge by soliciting an actual job. The importance of writing in APA style most editors prefer and writing a clean and accurate copy, is detailed. Students are taught how to be organized and present themselves professionally. Differences between correspondents and freelance writers (for newspapers) and reporters is addressed. Students are taught how to utilize tools (such aslibraries/newspapers, etc.)to help them land a job as a correspondent.
