Individuals will learn how to pitch editors that will net their first sale. Whether they are looking to make money during their spare time or want to pursue freelancing full time. They?ll learn which department to address for the type of feature they want to write. And which departments are more likely to be receptive.

A. Know how to present their ideas for freelance work. B. Feel confident to approach the appropriate editor for their proposed piece C. Should have contacted several editors and newspapers about work D. Should have successfully sold one or more features.
Assessment
1. Student will demonstrate their knowledge of AP (Associated Press) style through a series of mini exercises and their article. 2. Students will demonstrate their ability to present their work by pitching it to one or more editors/newspapers

In the first week we will discuss the student?s objective for enrollment. Are they looking to supplement their income on a part time basis or wanting to freelance full time? Students are given a couple of mini exercises to assess their writing ability.
In the second week students begin learning the basics of AP (Associated Press) writing style and employ it in an trail piece after given basic facts. Students also make a chart to track their submissions/results.
In the third week the student''s news story is returned and critiqued to help the student learn. Markets and different news styles are discussed and the student begins working on approaching an editor with a saluable story.Students submit a draft of their story to the instructor.
In the fourth and final week submits their article to the editor/market they have picked and turn in their submissions chart for final grading.
More time if needed.
