Full Description
Provides information regarding young adults and young adult literature. Selection and evaluation criteria for young adult literature are explored, as well as genres of adolescent literature and resources for librarians.


Outcomes:
Students will be able to: * Become familiar with some of the interests and concerns of young adults today. * Learn criteria for evaluating young adult fiction. * Have a basic understanding of the developmental needs of young adults. * Learn about the evolution of young adult literature. * Become familiar with the term “genre” and the basic genres of young adult literature. * Become familiar with the genre of realistic fiction for young adults. * Be able to identify some notable books and authors of realistic fiction. * Become familiar with a wide variety of bibliographic, print and online review sources for young adult literature. * Become familiar with specific print review journal useful in selection and evaluation of young adult literature. * Understand the importance of proper and effective selection and evaluation of young adult literature. * Become familiar with a variety of publishers and books distributors for young adult literature. * Become aware of the importance of intellectual freedom in school library media centers and the enormous pressure on librarians to censor materials in school libraries. * Recognize that parents have a right to restrict access to library materials but only for their own children. * Become familiar with effective young adult literature marketing strategies. * Gain knowledge regarding booktalking for young adults.

This course is designed as one credit hour or 15 hours of professional development. Check with
the institution to be sure if credit is offered for this course.


Assessment:
The student will take an objective-based post exam consisting of 10 to 15 multiple choice and true or false questions. A score of 85% or higher is considered successful completion of the course.
