| Provides information regarding young adult literature in the genres of fiction, fantasy, horror, and physical and emotional problems. Survival and adventure genres are appraised, along with literature that relates to the problems of youth growing up today. |

Students will be able to: * Gain an understanding of the appeal of science fiction, fantasy and horror to young adult readers. * Become familiar with some authors of these genres. * Gain an understanding of how books can connect with the problems young adults face. * Become familiar with some authors and books that deal with physical and emotional problems. * Gain an understanding of the appeal of Survival and Adventure fiction. * Become familiar with some authors of these genres. * Gain an understanding of the appeal of works dealing with family and life problems. * Become familiar with some authors of these genres. * Gain an understanding of how books can connect with the problems young adults face. * Become familiar with some authors and books that deal with personal problems and growing into maturity. This course is designed as one credit hour or 15 hours of professional development. Check with the institution to be sure if credit is offered for this course. |

The student will take an objective-based post exam consisting of 10 to 15 multiple choice and true or false questions. A score of 85% or higher is considered successful completion of the course. |
