| Deals with how to introduce young children to the joys of literature and the skills of literacy, how to balance text and illustrations in picture books, and introducing poetry. |

Students will be able to: * Consider the role of Mother Goose books, toy and board books. * Examine books for emergent readers. * Examine kinds of picture books and illustrations. * Be aware of selection considerations. * Examine elements, forms, and evaluation and presentation of poetry. This course is designed as one credit hour or 15 hours of professional development. Check with the institution to be sure if credit is offered for this course. |
| The student will take an objective-based post exam consisting of 10 to 15 multiple choice and true or false questions. A score of 85% or higher is considered successful completion of the course. |
