Students will be able to: * Become familiar with elements of fiction composition. * Understand how these elements relate to the success of a work of fiction. * Understand how point of view, style, and tone contribute to the success of a work of fiction. * Get guidelines for evaluating nonfiction for young adults. * Learn reasons why young adults read nonfiction. * Learn about popular topics in young adult nonfiction. * Gain an appreciation for the importance of poetry in young adult collections. * Gain an understanding of the popularity and importance of young adult series fiction. * Be able to identify some current series for young adults. * Discover the basics of Booktalking. * Identify what elements should be included in a booktalk based on books they have read. * Examine ways to connect books to school curriculum. This course is designed as one credit hour or 15 hours of professional development. Check with the institution to be sure if credit is offered for this course. |

The student will take an objective-based post exam consisting of 10 to 15 multiple choice and true or false questions. A score of 85% or higher is considered successful completion of the course. |
