A Workshop Approach to Mastering RoboHelp Office (Latest Release)

Full Description
This course offers individuals an opportunity to build a standalone help project by applying the principles outlined in each of the three lesson plans through a systematic and hands-on approach.

Each student will develop and create their own online help project using the techniques and objectives discussed in each lesson plan. Actual problem solving situations will be introduced to reinforce the concepts presented in the lesson plan. By actually working through these problems, individuals will learn how to effectively apply troubleshooting techniques to real life predicaments that are encountered during online help development. This interactive method will enhance the individual’s knowledge of the RoboHelp authoring tool and will develop a true sense of the troubleshooting skills necessary for future reference.

Individualized consulting is always readily available through the use of email. Additional resources, articles and websites related to the RoboHelp community will be supplied to all participants.

Outcomes:
Participants will be assessed by successfully completing the activities presented in addition to the creation and completion of a multiple-chapter help project.

Assessment:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will:

A. Have a complete understanding of the concepts behind RoboHelp Office.
B. Develop a strategy for making the initial decisions that need to be made at the beginning of the project involving the basic infrastructure.
C. Design and create a help project by importing documents, converting existing projects from other formats, or creating the project directly in RoboHelp.
D. Understand the importance of developing a clear, concise and robust help project.
E. Learn advanced troubleshooting skills that will save time and money.
Week 1
Terminology & Creating a Project
By reviewing the source code of an existing help project, you will be introduced to terminology, user interface, concepts and features available in RoboHelp. The important decision making process regarding the initial infrastructure and organization for a help development project will be discussed.

Step by step instructions will be given to create and compile your own individualized standalone help project directly within the RoboHelp authoring tool. This will provide a basic understanding of the concepts that were reviewed in the source code. An intentional error log will be generated to allow troubleshooting methods and solutions to be discussed. Week 2
Intermediate & Advanced Features
The ability to import Microsoft Word documents directly into the project and convert them to RoboHelp topics are introduced. While creating, importing and converting several documents, we will discuss possible conversion issues. An in-depth review of topics and their properties will include generating keywords and A-links for indexing and searching capabilities.

Since the user interface of a help project is instrumental in determining its usefulness, we will take a look at defining main and secondary windows according to size, color and location. What type of functions and navigation methods should be made available as buttons on a window?

A table of contents is also very important because it is most likely the first place an individual will look for the needed information. This is when we will create ‘books’ which will appear in the table of contents and then associate the related ‘pages’ to a book. We will talk about the ability to pull in another external help project and have its table of contents and index appear in the active help project.

The greatest advantage to a help project is the ability to insert hyperlinks to a word, picture or button which will bring the user to another related topic. This is done by adding links in the appropriate places. Graphics and multimedia are interesting ways to be creative while adding depth to your project. A review of creating these links using several different methods will be discussed in this section.
Week 3
The Finishing Touches
By using identifying build tags, you can have a single source help project that contains all of the necessary information and, according to its build tag, will produce different outputs when compiled. When the help authoring is complete, your project can be compiled in a way that will compress the size of the project. You may want to utilize the various reports that can be produced within your project to locate possible errors. What are the files that need to be distributed with your help project in order for it to run successfully? One click of a check box can change the entire appearance of your project from the standard Winhelp look to one that resembles HTML. This final session will include all of the finishing touches that can be done to give your help project a polished look.
