Lesson 1:The SmartDraw Window
In this lesson, you will learn about the user interface, what is on each of the menus and what
each option does, and identify the tools and how they work.
Lesson 2:Creating Flow Charts
In this lesson, you will create a software flowchart showing the planning of a security system. In this series of exercises, you will create a page, draw lines, open a library, drag shapes from a library, and save the file.
Lesson 3:Working with Templates
In this lesson, you will open a template, alter the contents of the template, add and remove objects, alter objects, create a new document, and create a new object to add to a library.
Lesson 4:Linking and Embedding SmartDraw objects
In this lesson, you will work with the OLE system within the Windows operating environment.
Lesson 5: Creating drawings for the Web and exporting drawings to other file types
In this lesson, you will create a simple web site using the tools within SmartDraw and you will explore
the export filters provided with SmartDraw.
Lesson 6:Library Builder Wizard, Layers and Freehand Lines
In this lesson, you will build a library from graphics on your hard drive, use the layers function to
alter a template, and draw shapes using the Freehand drawing tool.
| The slogan for SmartDraw is "Draw anything easily" and the program designers have worked very hard to make that a reality. They provide Hint screens, Advisor dialogs, and a tutorial. Each of these tools can give you useful information about what the program can do and how it works. This workshop will provide you with hands-on experience in the program by guiding you through step-by-step exercises. |

At the end of the class, each student should: Be able to recognize the tools and menus so they can use the program and learn to apply it to their own work situation. Create a basic flow chart by setting up a document, opening a library and dragging shapes to that chart as well as add text. Be able to utilize templates to create new documents and create new objects that are added to the library. Be able to utilize the OLE system within the Windows operating environment to enable SmartDraw to import MS Office documents. Be able to create objects for the Web with SmartDraw. Be able to use the Library Builder and advanced tools such as Freehand drawing. |
| Each lesson has exercises to be done within the program. At the end of each lesson, the student will answer a series of questions about the material. If the student is unable to answer these questions accurately, they are encouraged to redo the exercises until they feel competent using the skills in that chapter. |
