COMMUNICATING FROM THE HEART

UTILIZING EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE TO ENHANCE BUSINESS, CORPORATE, AND PERSONAL PRODUCTIVITY AND PROFITABILITY

a highly interactive two-day program

conducted by G. K. Lim, ISO CMS, FInstSMM

The corporate world has finally accepted the fact that a high level of Emotional Intelligence (EI) is required for upward mobility on the corporate ladder. Today, there are no critics or detractors to this line of management thought. Leaders in corporate Asia have similar attitudes towards the value of EI.

EI is that quality in a person that endears him / her to others. It is a synergistic combination of two intelligences -- intrapersonal intelligence and interpersonal intelligence.

A lucky small percentage of a given population is born with the required high level of EI. These people effortlessly win other people s hearts, and are everybody s favorite.

The majority of the people have to take a little bit of effort to raise their level of EI. This is possible because the information and skills are available. All that is needed is an understanding and practice of the principles of EI.

This program brings participants through an understanding of the concept of Emotional Intelligence and then shows them how to acquire this useful skill.

PROGRAM TOPICS

DAY ONE

What s EI, anyway?
If you want other people s S. T. A. R. (support, trust, admiration and respect), then you need a high level of EI (Emotional Intelligence). A discussion of the various intelligences that we are born with -- linguistic, logical-mathematical, musical, spatial-visual, bodily-kinesthetic, naturalist, existential, intrapersonal, and interpersonal. Identifying the professions that each intelligence influence.

Why is EI so important?
Companies, societies and organizations have one major ingredient -- human beings. Without human beings, companies, societies and organizations cannot function and grow. Emotional intelligence (EI) is the quality that enables a person to become a leader within a company, a society or an organization.

Dr. Daniel Goleman on video
Participants listen to Daniel Goleman, the originator of the word EI, explain the concepts of EI.

The intrapersonal intelligence aspect of EI
Intrapersonal intelligence is the ability to be aware of, to recognize, and then to control, your inner emotions. A group discussion of emotions all human beings experience

Before you go out to conquer the world, put yourself in order first
This portion discusses why most people live unfulfilled lives with unfulfilled dreams, desires, goals; with unfulfilled expectations of loved ones; with feelings of low self-worth and feelings of helplessness. Most dreams are unfulfilled because of early influences, society is negative, society breeds failures, society is not perfect, and we follow blindly

How to raise your self-esteem
And make all your dreams come true. The various proven principles, strategies and ideas that will help you reach your goals.

How to have high EI
Have empathy. How to have empathy: look at life through other people s tainted glass reality

Group exercise: Two persons
Think of two persons you respect most. What did they do to deserve your respect? Participants list out and discuss the responses to the two questions above.

Group exercise: Benefits
Participants discuss the personal and company benefits of earning other people s S.T.A.R.

How to look through other people s tainted glass reality
Based on the discussions and the list generated above, we can safely say that they fall under the following strategies of looking at others through the tainted glass reality:

Strategy One
Other people are important too. The foundation of teamwork, leadership, and business.

Group discussion: People are important
Discuss why should we treat other people important?

Strategy Two
You must allow others to make mistakes. That way, you consider them as human beings, and not just as subordinates, peers, and superiors. Realize that people are not perfect, and have the right to make mistakes. To err is ....... Namaste

Exercise in pairs: Think back ..
Situation: one of your subordinates/peers made a mistake. How did you respond to that situation? Looking back, could you have done better?

Group exercise: Think of one mistake you made
How did you feel about making that mistake? If you were criticized, chastised, scolded, evaluated, for that mistake, how did you feel when that criticism was made on you? How do you NOW feel about that mistake and the events surrounding it?

Strategy Three
Don t CCC -- condemn, criticize, comment negatively -- instead, evaluate

Group Exercise: Think back
Think of a recent incident where a subordinate made a mistake. How did you handle the situation? How would you have done better in your handling of that incident?

Being assertive vs. aggressive
A discussion on what is being assertive and being aggressive, and differences. Exercise: aggressive and assertive statements.

DAY TWO

Group Activity: The difference between being assertive and being aggressive.

Strategy Four
Contain your anger, because he who angers you, conquers you.

Group exercise: Think of somebody
Think of somebody who always makes you angry / annoyed. Think of a person who got angry with you because of something you did, either deliberately or without realizing it. Think of a person who gets angry very easily. Think of a person who never gets angry easily, even though he or she is sometimes driven up the wall by something or someone.

Strategy Five
Earning the trust and respect of others through listening
Effective communication skills is the backbone of human interactions. A discussion of how the hectic pace of business has diminished the ability to listen for understanding. How we can communicate so that we understand what others mean. Why good communications is vital to team leadership and a high EI.

Exercise in pairs: Communication exercise
The listener and the talker. To illustrate the importance of listening

Individual Exercise: Communication
What do you feel represents your biggest problems in communications? You go to your superior to discuss an important problem on your job, and the superior keeps answering the telephone, shuffling papers on the desk, and looking at the clock. Mentally picture one person who doesn t listen well. Discuss your opinion of this person

Group exercise: Benefits of good communication
What are the benefits we get when we communicate well. All the teams start. The team with the most benefits gets the most stars

Strategy Six
Realize that it s easy to misunderstand, difficult to understand. So seek first to understand.

How do you feel?
And how do you now feel? After discussing the exercise, have a general discussion of the message of the exercise: A matter of prejudgment. We have problems because we prejudge

Strategy Seven
People are different in processing information and making decisions. What type are you? Participants take a psychometric test.

Strategy Eight
Realize that you do communicate even without opening your mouth.

Building trust
Creating a trust bank

The mind already has the answer
A study of the power of meditation, autosuggestion, and mental projection to influence others emotionally.

Change is necessary
A discussion and an exercise on change -- to help participants realize that change is necessary, can be fun, and happens all the time.

Individual exercise: Think back
Of all the changes you have made in your life, which one was the toughest. What did you learn that you can pass to others? Of all the changes you have made in your life, which one makes you the proudest? And tell us why it is so.

Team exercise: The Great Jigsaw Puzzle Contest
As individuals, you don't have everything, and you can t do everything by yourself. If you want to be a leader, if you want to get things done through others, you need other people s help. There is an element of surprise in this exercise. The purpose of this exercise is reveal attitudes within participants with regards to teamwork.

The grand finale
I like you because ........

Action plan
You will find out how to ensure that you consistently practice and apply these principles, ideas and strategies in your life so that you are assured of attaining a high level of EI
