Description

This course is intended for end users who are looking to learn basic concepts and components of a computer. Participants will be introduced to basic features and functionality of Windows 95, software applications, e-mail and the Internet.

Audience

This course is for anyone who is beginning to work with computers or would like to learn about the basic concepts and features of computers and application software.

Prerequisites

(Currently no course prerequisite information)

Objective

• Identify the basic concepts and components of a computer.


• Perform basic tasks with applications and files in Windows 95.


• Perform basic tasks with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.


• Identify common uses of the Internet.


• Browse the Internet using Internet Explorer.


• Identify the benefits of email and send email messages.

Unit 1: Personal Computer: An Introduction

• Identify the benefits of computers.
• Identify the components of a personal computer.
• Sequence the stages in the basic operation of a computer.

• Identify the differences between RAM and ROM.

Unit 2: Working with Windows 95

• Identify the functions of an operating system.
• Identify the differences between DOS and Windows 95.

• Open an application in Windows 95 by using the Start menu.
• Shut down Windows 95 by using the Start menu.
• Identify components of a window.
• Perform sizing operations on a window.

Unit 4: Internet, WWW and E-mail

• Identify the purpose of a modem in the communication between two computers.
• Identify the uses of the Internet.
• Identify the different modes of accessing the Internet.
• Access a web site by using Microsoft Internet Explorer.
• Navigate to different pages of a web site.
• Download files from a web page.
• Add a web site or a web page to the list of favorites.
• Perform a simple search for web pages that contain a specified word.
• Perform the steps to send a document using Microsoft Outlook.
• Send an attachment with an e-mail message.
• Save an attachment received in an e-mail message.

Minimum Requirements

The CDROM version of this course requires:

• At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.


• Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.


• At least 8MB RAM.


• At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).


• At least a double speed CDROM drive.


• An MPC compliant sound card with attached speakers or headphones is recommended (Currently, only the CDROM version supports audio).

• At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.


• At least 8MB RAM and XXMB available hard disk space or file server space.


• At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
