Description

The first course in the Linux Red Hat Advanced System Administration series provides users with a methodology for planning and installing a Red Hat system. It identifies issues to resolve during the planning stage. It also provides an overview of the installation process and teaches the learner how to install a basic Red Hat system.

Audience

The audience for this curriculum will be relatively wide. Learners will generally come from three backgrounds: The first group are existing Linux System Administrators whose focus is to learn specifically about Red Hat Linux. The second group is specifically preparing to take the RHCE exam and is using our course to support this certification. The third group is Linux expert/power users who want to learn the nuts and bolts of Red Hat Linux system administration. In general, you can consider the learners who take this curriculum will have a strong understanding of the content in our Linux Essentials curriculum.

  • Identify the features of the Linux Loader (LILO) boot file system.
  • Identify the features of the Linux Loader (LILO) configuration file.
  • Identify the parameters that can be passed to the Linux Loader (LILO).

Unit 1: Preparing for a Linux Installation

  • Identify the stages in the historical development of the Linux operating system.

  • Identify the requirements for getting started with Linux.
  • Identify the guidelines for selecting an Intel-based hardware platform.
  • Identify issues relating to the selection and configuration of Intel hardware.
  • Identify the guidelines for planning hard disk partitions.
  • Identify the features of the main Linux disk subsystems.

Unit 2: Linux Installation Process

  • Identify the features of the three main workstation installation classes.
  • Identify the features of the server installation option.
  • Identify the features of the custom installation option.
  • Identify preparations to be made before installing Linux.
  • Identify boot disk options for installing Linux.
  • Identify the guidelines for checking errata.
  • Identify the steps to start the Linux installation procedure.

  • Identify the procedure for partitioning a hard disk in the custom installation option.
  • Identify the steps involved in selecting packages in a custom installation.

Unit 3: Installation Fundamentals

  • Identify the features of the Linux Loader (LILO) boot file system.
  • Identify the features of the Linux Loader (LILO) configuration file.
  • Identify the parameters that can be passed to the Linux Loader (LILO).
  • Identify common Linux Loader (LILO) error messages.
  • Identify the features of the loadlin boot loader program.
  • Identify the procedure for viewing boot time information.
  • Identify methods for improving system performance by configuring the Hard Disk system.
  • Identify the procedures for creating Linux file system partitions.
  • Identify the features of the fdisk utility.
  • Identify partition scenarios.

Minimum Requirements

The CDROM version of this course requires:

  • At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
  • At least 8MB RAM.
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
  • At least a double speed CDROM drive.
  • An MPC compliant sound card with attached speakers or headphones is recommended (Currently, only the CDROM version supports audio).
The network version of this course requires:
  • At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
  • At least 8MB RAM and 22MB available hard disk space or file server space.
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
