Description

The second course in the Linux Red Hat Advanced System Administration series builds up a deeper understanding of some installation and startup options. It covers some installation troubleshooting and initial configuration. It also covers how to set up users and manage software after a Red Hat Linux installation.

Audience

The audience for this curriculum will be relatively wide. Learners will generally come from three backgrounds: The first group are existing Linux System Administrators whose focus is to learn specifically about Red Hat Linux. The second group is specifically preparing to take the RHCE exam and is using our course to support this certification. The third group are Linux expert/power users who want to learn the nuts and bolts of Red Hat Linux system administration. In general, you can consider the learners who take this curriculum will have a strong understanding of the content in our Linux Essentials curriculum.

  • Identify the features of a dual boot system for Linux and Windows 95/98.
  • Identify the steps to install a dual boot system for Linux and Windows NT.
  • Identify the steps to install Linux on a laptop computer.
  • Identify the steps to install and configure a Network Interface Card (NIC) by using Linuxconf.
  • Identify the steps to configure a small local area network (LAN).
  • Identify the guidelines for configuring a sound card in Red Hat Linux.
  • Identify the options available when managing user accounts in Linuxconf.
  • Identify the features of file permissions in Red Hat Linux.
  • Identify the commands used to manage users and groups.

Unit 1: Advanced Installation Options

  • Identify the ways in which processes are managed in the GNOME.
  • Schedule a process by using the at command.
  • Identify the procedure for scheduling processes by using the crontab command.
  • Identify the functions of the locate and tmpwatch commands.
  • Identify the features of system log files.
  • Identify the features of archive files within the GNOME File Manager.
  • Identify the options for performance monitoring in the GNOME.
  • Identify the features of Update Agent.
  • Identify Red Hat Linux help resources.

Minimum Requirements

The CDROM version of this course requires:

  • At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
  • At least 8MB RAM.
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
  • At least a double speed CDROM drive.
  • An MPC compliant sound card with attached speakers or headphones is recommended (Currently, only the CDROM version supports audio).
The network version of this course requires:
  • At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
  • At least 8MB RAM and 22MB available hard disk space or file server space.
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
