Managing a Value Chain focuses on strategic response to the requirements of your value-creating business design and the management of elements of the value chain in order to win competitive advantage. It provides the learner with specific strategies to maximize the flow of products services and information and raw materials to the final point of consumption. It covers methods of winning cost advantage and achieving the value proposition ways of maximizing collaboration within the value chain competitive management of demand and channels and competitive management of distribution and operations.

Unit 1: Cost Advantage and the Value Proposition
- Analyze costs.
- Identify steps involved in analyzing competitors.
- Apply ways to gain cost advantage.

- Identify steps to develop a value proposition strategy.
- Identify ways to use the Web to create value.
- Simulation Overview:
- In this simulation Icon International plan to introduce aspects of Value Chain Management into your department. This is a pilot project and you have been chosen specifically to implement this change. You are meeting Keith Collins to make sure you have a good understanding of how to analyze costs analyze your competitors and create buyer value.
Unit 2: Maximizing Collaboration
- Identify goals of collaboration in the value chain.
- Recognize types of relationships between business units.
- Identify stages in developing a collaborative relationship.
- Identify elements of a plan to achieve collaboration.
- Simulation Overview:
- In this simulation you will meet with Kevin McDonald Operations Manager from Icon International to discuss issues relating to collaboration. Kevin will ask you a number of questions on the advantages and goals of collaboration and the stages involved in developing a collaborative project.
Unit 3: Logistics: Managing Demand
- Identify advantages of logistics process re-engineering.
- Identify the features of a market-driven logistics strategy.
- Identify internal causes of demand volatility.
- Identify an approach to effective demand management.
- Identify different methods of forecasting.
- Simulation Overview:
- In this simulation you will meet with Kevin McDonald Operations Manager to discuss logistics strategies and demand management. He will ask you questions throughout the conversation to gauge your understanding of the information covered in this unit.
Unit 4: Distribution and Operations Management
- Identify reasons for distribution channel innovation.
- Identify guidelines for developing a distribution strategy.
- Recognize transport management solutions.
- Determine advantages of enhanced transportation processes.
- Identify solutions to inventory management.
- Simulation Overview:
- In this simulation you will meet with Kathy Edwards Regional Marketing Manager to discuss distribution and operations management. You are hoping to take over this area in Icon International and you want to make a good impression. If this discussion goes well there is a good chance that Kathy will be positive about your ambitions.

Minimum RequirementsThe CDROM version of this course requires:
- At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
- Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
- At least 8MB RAM.
- At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
- At least a double speed CDROM drive.
- An MPC compliant sound card with attached speakers or headphones is recommended (Currently only the CDROM version supports audio).
- At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
- Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
- At least 8MB RAM and 22MB available hard disk space or file server space.
- At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
