Anyone who wants to learn about laws that govern the interview process.

Objective

  • Conduct preemployment inquiries that are EEO compliant.
  • Differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate lines of questioning.
  • Recognize conditions that are and are not considered disabilities.
  • Define the essential functions of a job and provide reasonable accommodations for a candidate with disabilities.
  • Comply with employee documentation requirements set forth in the Immigration Reform and Control Act.

Topics Include

Unit 1: Background Information

  • Comply with your EEO responsibilities as an interviewer.
  • Conduct pre-employment inquiries that are EEO compliant.
  • Follow general principles to help reduce the chance of overstepping EEO requirements.
  • Define some key EEO terms.
  • List the EEO laws that protect specific groups.
  • Simulation Overview:
  • In this simulation you will be meeting with John Cunningham one of Icon International's Human Resources Assistants. You will discuss the EEO provisions outlined by EEO and EEOC guidelines and terms.

Unit 2: Non-discrimination and Interview Questions

  • Differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate lines of questioning.
  • Know what questions are forbidden under the federal equal employment laws.
  • Apply the Pregnancy Discrimination Act to inquiries.
  • Ask appropriate questions about a candidate's military service.
  • Avoid asking questions that are not permissible according to law.
  • Ask permissible questions relating to residence.
  • Simulation Overview:
  • In this simulation you will be interviewing Robin Carlson a candidate for the position of Product Manager at Icon International's financial services division. You have already established a rapport with the candidate and you must ask appropriate questions about her education and professional skills.

Unit 3: Americans with Disabilities Act

  • Recognize the conditions that are and are not considered disabilities.
  • Define the essential functions for a job.
  • Provide reasonable accommodations for a candidate.
  • Avoid questions that are prohibited by the ADA.
  • Know the answers to questions a candidate may ask regarding the ADA.
  • Simulation Overview:
  • In this simulation you will be interviewing Greg Baldwin a candidate for the position of Product Manager at Icon International's financial services division. Your goal is to ask questions that will enable you to determine if this candidate has the skills required for the job.

Unit 4: Immigration Reform and Control Act

  • Fill out the Form I-9.
  • Make sure employees complete the Form I-9 by specified dates.
  • Make sure your organization keeps the Form I-9 for the correct length of time.
  • Simulation Overview:
  • In this simulation you will be meeting with Carla Jackson one of Icon's Human Resources Assistants to discuss the Immigration Reform and Control Act. Through your questions you will learn how to hire prospective employees legally under the Immigration Reform and Control Act.

Minimum Requirements

The CDROM version of this course requires:

  • At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
  • At least 8MB RAM.
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
  • At least a double speed CDROM drive.
  • An MPC compliant sound card with attached speakers or headphones is recommended (Currently only the CDROM version supports audio).
The network version of this course requires:
  • At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
  • At least 8MB RAM and 22MB available hard disk space or file server space.
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
