Description

This course is for users who want to take advantage of the most advanced features and capabilities of Windows 98. At the completion of this course participants will learn to connect to the Internet with Internet Explorer; send e-mail messages with Outlook Express; configure their computer to suit individual work styles; maintain files by timely backup of a hard drive, restoring files and updating critical system files; maintain data on a hard disk by performing disk defragmentation and ScanDisk.

Audience

This course is intended for users who want to learn the most-used facilities of Windows 98. Participants should have taken Introduction to PCs and Application Software (Course 12994), Microsoft Windows 98 User Fundamentals (Course 71011) and Microsoft Windows 98 Advanced User (Course 71012).

  • Send email messages by using Outlook Express and faxes with Microsoft Fax.
  • Configure a Windows 98 system to suit individual work styles.
  • Use a Windows 98 system to manage the system environment.
  • Maintain files on a Windows 98 system by ensuring timely backup of a hard drive, restoring files and updating critical system files.
  • Maintain data on a hard disk by performing disk defragmentation and ScanDisk.

Unit 1: Windows 98 and Internet

  • Match the new Internet utilities supported by Windows 98 with their functions.
  • Configure the Internet Explorer browser.
  • Identify the features of Internet Explorer 4.0.
  • Identify the uses of NetMeeting.
  • Start a chat session.
  • Play a multimedia file in NetShow Player.
  • Connect to a Web site using Internet Explorer.
  • Access a previously visited Web page.
  • Add a link to a frequently accessed site in the Favorites Folder.

Unit 2: Outlook Express and Microsoft Fax

  • Identify the functions of Outlook Express.
  • Create an e-mail message in Outlook Express by using stationery.
  • Post a reply to a newsgroup message to the whole newsgroup by using Outlook Express.

  • Add a contact in the Address Book.

Unit 3: Configuring Windows 98

  • Change the speed of the keyboard.
  • Enable the keyboard to support multiple languages.

  • Create a My Briefcase folder on the Desktop.

  • Synchronize files between the My Briefcase folder and a floppy disk.
  • Synchronize files on two computers connected over a network.

Minimum Requirements

The CDROM version of this course requires:

  • At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
  • At least 8MB RAM.
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
  • At least a double speed CDROM drive.
  • An MPC compliant sound card with attached speakers or headphones is recommended (Currently, only the CDROM version supports audio).
The network version of this course requires:
  • At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
  • At least 8MB RAM and 22MB available hard disk space or file server space.
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
