Description

This is the second course in a four part series for Systems Engineers who intend to install, configure, customize, optimize, maintain, and troubleshoot the Microsoft Windows 95 operating system. This series aims to enable the professionals to pass Microsoft exam 70-064, Implementing and Supporting Microsoft Windows 95.

Audience

This course is intended for IT Professionals seeking Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer or Certified Product Specialist status. Participants should have taken Networking Essentials 2nd Edition (courses 71441 - 71444) and have taken the first course in this series.

Objective

  • Create and manage the disk partitions in Windows 95.
  • Describe multitasking in Windows 95 and configure 16bit Windows-based and MSDOS-based programs in Windows 95.
  • Administer and configure printing in Windows 95.
  • Configure Windows 95 to support user profiles and administer user profiles on a Windows NT and NetWare network.
  • Identify the functions and modes of system policies.
  • Install the System Policy Editor and assign system policies to users, groups and computers and troubleshoot policies.

Unit 1: Managing Disks in Windows 95

  • Identify the characteristics of a MS-DOS file name.
  • Match the problems associated with long file names with their causes.
  • Match the problems in Windows 95 file systems with the debugging settings used to solve them.
  • Identify the characteristics of Primary and Extended partitions.
  • Create a partition.
  • Format disk partitions by using Windows 95 Explorer.
  • Optimize disk performance by using the disk management tools.
  • Compress a disk by using the DriveSpace disk compression tool.
  • Rectify disk errors by using the ScanDisk tool.
  • Defragment a disk by using the Disk Defragmenter tool.
  • Make a backup by using the Backup system tool.

Unit 2: Supporting Programs in Windows 95

  • Differentiate between a process and a thread in Windows 95.
  • Differentiate between preemptive and cooperative multitasking.
  • Identify the problems in configuring a 16-bit Windows-based applications in Windows 95.
  • Configure the MS-DOS mode for a MS-DOS-based program.

Unit 3: Printing in Windows 95

  • Install a local printer.
  • Configure a local printer.
  • Administer the print queue for a local printer.
  • Identify the functions of the print spooler.
  • Match the three despooling options for metafiles with the situations in which they are used.
  • Match the troubleshooting options in printing with their functions.

Unit 4: Managing Windows 95 User Profiles

  • Configure Windows 95 to support local and roaming user profiles.
  • Modify a user profile.
  • Identify the requirements for implementing Windows 95 user profiles on a Windows NT network.

Unit 5: Implementing System Policies in Windows 95

  • Identify the functions of system policies.
  • Install System Policy Editor.
  • Modify the local registry by using the System Policy Editor in the Registry mode.
  • Create a network-based system policy using the System Policy Editor in the Policy File Mode.
  • Identify the functions of policy settings.
  • Identify the guidelines for assigning the system policies to groups.
  • Identify the functions of the types of system policy settings for computers.
  • Identify the features of the methods used for improving network performance.
  • Troubleshoot system policies.

Minimum Requirements

The CDROM version of this course requires:

  • At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
  • At least 8MB RAM.
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
  • At least a double speed CDROM drive.
  • An MPC compliant sound card with attached speakers or headphones is recommended (Currently, only the CDROM version supports audio).
The network version of this course requires:
  • At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
  • At least 8MB RAM and 13MB available hard disk space or file server space.
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
