Description

This course is the first part of a two part series that will provide participants the knowledge to install, configure, integrate, optimize and troubleshoot clustering technologies for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0.

Audience

This course is intended for IT support professionals who will be responsible for installing, configuring, customizing and/or troubleshooting Cluster Server. Participants should have taken Networking Essentials 2nd Edition (Course Series 71441-71444), Supporting Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Core Technologies (Course Series 71410-71413) and Internetworking TCP/IP on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 (Course Series 71435-71438).

Objective

  • Understand the definitions of clustering terms and the benefits of clustering.
  • Identify the functions of the Cluster Service Manager and the additional architectural components of the Microsoft Cluster Server.
  • Identify the requirements for maintaining data availability and Cluster Server installation.
  • Install Cluster Server and sequence the steps in Cluster Server operations.

Unit 1: Microsoft Cluster Server Overview

  • Match the clustering terms with their definitions.
  • Identify the benefits of clustering.
  • Distinguish between the features of the two cluster implementation.
  • Identify the methods by which the nodes in the cluster communicate in specific situations.
  • Identify the functions of the Database Manager.
  • Identify the activities performed by the Node Manager when it detects node failure.
  • Identify the functions of the Event Processor.
  • Identify the functions of the Communication Manager.
  • Identify the functions of the Global Update Manager.
  • Sequence the tasks performed by the Resource/Failover Manager when pushing a group form one node to another in a cluster.
  • Identify the tasks performed by a Resource Monitor to determine a resource failure.
  • Identify the function of the Time Service.

Unit 2: Deploying Microsoft Cluster Server

  • Identify the criteria that must be satisfied by a resource to be used with Cluster Server.
  • Identify the modifications that must be done in the server operating procedures for the Cluster Server servers installed on the network.
  • Identify the appropriate licensing options to be implemented for given situations.
  • Identify the software requirements for installing Cluster Server.
  • Identify the hardware requirements for installing Cluster Server.
  • Identify the steps involved in configuring the SCSI devices to install the Cluster Server.
  • Identify the methods that can be used to terminate the shared SCSI bus.
  • Sequence the steps to assign a drive letter to the disk on the shared SCSI bus from both the nodes.
  • Install the Cluster Server on Node A.
  • Install the Cluster Server on Node B.
  • Install the Cluster Administrator on a non-cluster computer.
  • Sequence the steps to join a cluster by a node.
  • Identify the steps performed by a node when it leaves a cluster.

Minimum Requirements

The CDROM version of this course requires:

  • At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
  • At least 8MB RAM.
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
  • At least a double speed CDROM drive.
  • An MPC compliant sound card with attached speakers or headphones is recommended (Currently, only the CDROM version supports audio).
The network version of this course requires:
  • At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
  • At least 8MB RAM and 22MB available hard disk space or file server space.
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
