This is the third course in a seven part series for application developers who intend to design build and implement business solutions by using Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0. The series aims to enable the professionals to pass Microsoft exam 70-165 Developing Applications with Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0.

Audience
The course is intended for application developers who will use Visual Basic 5.0 to create sophisticated business applications. This series assumes that the learner has experience with Microsoft Windows operating system 3.1 or later and a knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications. Participants should also have the knowledge of Basic or another procedural language including experience using variables control structures like if-then-else statements and also looping structures like for and while loops. Participants should have taken Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0: Programming Fundamentals (Courses 71591 and 71592).
Objective
- Create an application that verifies data at the field level and the form level.
- Access a database using Data Control SQL and Advanced Databound Controls.

Unit 1: Input Validation
- Enter the code to validate field level date using the InputBox function.
- Enter the code to validate keystrokes.
- Enter the code to trap the function keystrokes.
- Set the masked edit control.
- Enter the code to validate data entered for a field.
- Enter the code to validate data in a field.
- Enter the code to validate a keypress at the form level using the KeyPreview property.
- Complete the code to enable an OK button on the form after the data has been entered.
- Complete the code to validate that a field is not left blank.
- Enter the code to activate forms using Activate events.
- Enter the code to restrict user input using the Load events.
Unit 2: Data Access Using Data Controls
- Identify the components of a database.
- Identify the categories of databases accessed by the Jet database engine in Visual Basic.
- Identify the functions of a data control.
- Match the properties of a data control with their functions.
- Identify the definition of a Recordset.
- Update records using data control methods.
- Add a record using the AddNew method.
- Delete a record.
- Verify data before writing it to the database.
- Perform an action before moving to the next record.
- Set Error Event response message in the event of data access error.
- Specify selection criteria for retrieving information using the SQL SELECT syntax.
- Combine records from multiple tables using SELECT with the inner join operation.
Unit 3: Using Data Bound Controls
- Enter the code to add an item to a ListBox.
- Identify the definition of a DBList control.
- Add data to a table using the DBList control.
- Identify the functions of a DBGrid control.
- Add a DBGrid control to your project.
- Set properties for individual columns in a data-bound grid.
- Enter the code to activate DBGrid events.

- Identify the functions of the MSFlexGrid control.
- Display information from a database using the MSFlexGrid control.

Minimum Requirements
The CDROM version of this course requires:
- At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
- Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
- At least 8MB RAM.
- At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
- At least a double speed CDROM drive.
- An MPC compliant sound card with attached speakers or headphones is recommended (Currently only the CDROM version supports audio).
- At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
- Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
- At least 8MB RAM and 22MB available hard disk space or file server space.
- At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
