Description

This is the final course in a three part series designed for developers. This series will introduce them to the opportunities and challenges of creating enterprise-level applications. Participants will see how creating such flexible and scalable applications can be challenging and will learn how to address these challenges by employing appropriate design, tools, and technology.

Audience

This course is intended for developers who want to create enterprise-level applications. Participants should have completed Solutions Development Discipline (Courses 72211, 72212 and 72213), Designing Component Solutions (Courses 72214 and 72215) and the first two courses in this series.

Objective

• Create Component Object Model (COM) components by deploying Visual Studio tools and identify their features.
• Build components that take advantage of the Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS) services.
• Identify the functions of Presentation Interface, the features of HTML and different HTML scripting types.

Topics Include

Unit 1: Component Object Model Components

• Identify the factors to be considered while designing a COM component.
• Create a COM component by using Visual Basic 6.0.
• Create a COM component by using Visual C++ 6.0.
• Create a COM component by using Visual J++ 6.0.
• Create a COM component by using Visual FoxPro 6.0.
• Identify the appropriate language used for building COM components in the given situation.

Unit 2: Business Tier: Implementation

• Identify the requirements of Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS) components.
• Match the MTS object methods with their features.
• Identify the factors to be considered while designing MTS components.
• Add a component to a given application by using the MTS explorer.
• Identify the different types of MTS security.
• Deploy an MTS package by exporting it.
• Sequence the steps performed by a client-executable application to configure a client for remote access.
• Deploy an MTS package by importing it.

Unit 3: Presentation Tier: Implementation

• Identify the functions of the presentation interface.
• Identify the features of HTML.
• Identify the features of the types of scripts used in HTML scripting.
• Identify the features of DHTML.
• Create a Web page that supports dynamic content by using Visual InterDev 6.0.
• Create an Active Server Page (ASP).
• Call COM components from an Active Server Page (ASP) file by using the CreateObject method.
• Identify the features of a Visual Basic WebClass.
• Identify the features of a Visual J++ DHTML class.
• Identify the features of Visual InterDev 6.0.
• Match the Visual InterDev 6.0 tools with their features.
• Edit an application by using Visual InterDev 6.0.
• Identify the features of a well-designed Windows-based application.
• Create a user interface for an application by using Visual Basic.
• Identify the steps to deploy an Active Server Page (ASP) application on a Web site.
• Identify the steps to deploy an IIS application on a Web site.
• Select an appropriate presentation tier technology for the given application scenarios.

Unit 4: Windows Applications Design

• Match the core requirements of a Windows application with the factors affecting them.
• Identify the changed core requirements and its impact on application performance in a given situation.
• Identify the factors that affect the performance of an application.
• Identify the impact of congestion by adding users to a shared resource on application performance.
• Identify the impact of comparing the response time of a synchronous call over different communication mediums on application performance.
• Identify the impact of changing the factors that affect response time on an application.
• Identify the impact of database locking on application performance.
• Sequence the steps to display the performance of an application by using Performance Monitor.
• Display the performance of a given application by using Visual Studio Analyzer.
• Identify the steps in performance tuning.

Minimum Requirements

The CDROM version of this course requires:

• At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
• Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
• At least 8MB RAM.
• At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
• At least a double speed CDROM drive.
• An MPC compliant sound card with attached speakers or headphones is recommended (Currently, only the CDROM version supports audio).

• At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
• Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
• At least 8MB RAM and 11MB available hard disk space or file server space.
• At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
