Audience
This course is intended for IT professionals who are responsible for installing configuring customizing optimizing integrating and troubleshooting Microsoft Windows 98. Participants should be familiar with Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 completed NETg courses series 71441 - 71444 Networking Essentials 2nd Edition and have taken the first course in the series.
Objective
- Partition a hard disk and convert a FAT16 file system to FAT32.
- Work with long file names and compress a drive by using DriveSpace3.
- Identify the printing process and enable hardware support for printing in a Windows 98 environment.
- Install and configure a local printer.
- Display system performance data and perform maintenance and backup tasks.
- Identify and troubleshoot the system problems that arise while working with Windows 98.

Unit 1: Configuring Hard Disks in Windows 98
- Identify the features of primary and extended MS-DOS partitions.
- Create partitions on a hard disk.
- Delete partitions on a hard disk.
- Format partitions on a hard disk.
- Identify the differences between FAT16 and FAT32 file systems.
- Identify the tasks to be performed before converting a partition to FAT32 file system.
- Convert an existing FAT16 partition to FAT32.
- Identify how Windows 98 implements long file names in FAT partitions.
- Identify the MS-DOS file name that Windows 98 will generate for a long file name.
- Match the common problems encountered while working with long file names with their probable solutions.
- Sequence the different compression methods supported by DriveSpace3 in the order of the level of compression that they achieve.

Unit 2: Printing in Windows 98

- Configure a print queue to use deferred printing.
- Disable the MS-DOS print job spooling.
- Identify the recommended checks for troubleshooting printing problems.
Unit 3: Maintenance in a Stand-Alone Environment
- Display the system performance data for a specific item.
- Display system configuration data by using the Microsoft System Information.
- Identify the file formats that are supported by the Microsoft System Information Tool.
- Scan a drive by using the ScanDisk utility.
- Defragment a hard disk by using the Disk Defragmenter utility.
- Remove files from the hard disk by using the Disk Cleanup utility.
- Automate maintenance tasks.
- Update Windows 98.
- Install Microsoft Backup.
- Create a backup on a drive.
- Restore a Windows 95 backup file.

Unit 4: Troubleshooting System Problems
- Identify the functions of the Registry Checker utilities.
- Backup the registry manually by running Registry Checker.
- Create a Windows 98 Startup Disk.
- Match the support resources with the type of support they provide.
- Match the files needed to boot Windows 98 with their functions.
- Match the stages in the boot process with the functions performed during the stages.
- Match the options to customize the startup process in the MSDOS.sys file with their functions.

Minimum Requirements
The CDROM version of this course requires:
- At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
- Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
- At least 8MB RAM.
- At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
- At least a double speed CDROM drive.
- An MPC compliant sound card with attached speakers or headphones is recommended (Currently only the CDROM version supports audio).
- At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
- Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
- At least 8MB RAM and 22MB available hard disk space or file server space.
- At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
