Audience

This course is intended for IT professionals who are responsible for installing configuring customizing optimizing integrating and troubleshooting Microsoft Windows 98. Participants should be familiar with Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 completed NETg course series 71441-71444 Networking Essentials 2nd Edition and have taken the first four courses in the series.

  • Manage access to Internet resources.
  • Setup DialUp Networking Virtual Private Networks and Direct Cable connection.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot a network environment.

Unit 1: System Policies in Windows 98

  • Identify the system policy settings that perform the given tasks.
  • Identify the system policies that apply to the registry of a computer when a user logs on to the network.
  • Match the tools available to control a computer with the registry settings that they change.
  • Identify the tasks involved in successful implementation of system policies.
  • Install System Policy Editor.
  • Open the System Policy Editor.
  • Configure the Remote Update Policy on a computer running Windows 98.
  • Set the computer policies using the System Policy Editor in Policy File mode.
  • Set the policies for a user by using the System Policy Editor window.
  • Set the priority level for group policies.
  • Identify the steps that should be followed to implement system policies on different network types.
  • Configure the settings of a computer to enable Windows 98 to search the local path for a policy file.

Unit 2: Windows 98 on the Web

Unit 3: Implementing Dial-Up Networking

  • Install Dial-Up Networking software on a computer running Windows 98.
  • Install a modem by using the Modems icon in the Control Panel window.
  • Sequence the steps to configure an ISDN adapter in Windows 98.
  • Configure a TAPI location on your computer.
  • Create a new Dial-Up Networking connection.
  • Match the server types that are available for Windows 98 dial-up clients with their connection protocols.
  • Configure the server types and protocols for the given Dial-Up Networking client.
  • Execute a script to establish a Dial-Up Networking connection.
  • Configure Multilink connection for the given Dial-Up Networking connection.

  • Start the Windows Report Tool.
  • Start Windows 98 Troubleshooters.
  • Match Microsoft support resources with their content.
  • Install Remote Registry Service for administering a remote computer.
  • Verify the installation of Remote Registry Service by connecting to a remote computer.
  • Connect to a remote computer by using Remote Registry.
  • Run System Monitor to monitor the system parameters of a remote computer.

Minimum Requirements

The CDROM version of this course requires:

  • At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
  • At least 8MB RAM.
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
  • At least a double speed CDROM drive.
  • An MPC compliant sound card with attached speakers or headphones is recommended (Currently only the CDROM version supports audio).
The network version of this course requires:
  • At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
  • At least 8MB RAM and 22MB available hard disk space or file server space.
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
