This course is the first in a five-part series on Novell NetWare 5 Administration. This course covers the features and functionalities of NetWare 5 Novell Directory Services (NDS) setting up a NetWare 5 workstation user object access licenses and security. This course is an approved study guide that will help you prepare for certification exam 50-639 and is equivalent to Novell class 560.

Audience

This course is intended for network support professionals who plan to manage or administer networks based on NetWare 5. Students should have a basic understanding of personal computers operating systems and network technology; experience with DOS; and a working knowledge of Windows 95 or Windows NT Workstation. This course is also intended for students interested in gaining their Certified Novell Administrator CNA or Certified Novell Engineer CNE Certification.

  • Set up a Novell NetWare 5 workstation.

Unit 1: NetWare 5 and Novell Directory Services (NDS)

  • Identify the basic hardware components of a network.
  • Identify the responsibilities of the network administrator in setting up network services.

Unit 2: Workstation

  • Identify the tasks that are performed by a workstation to communicate with a network.
  • Identify the functions of workstation hardware.
  • Match workstation software with its functions.
  • Sequence the steps involved in the process of dataflow between workstation hardware and workstation software.
  • Identify the options that a network administrator will select to configure the Novell Client software for a workstation in a given situation.
  • Install Novell Client software on a Windows 95 workstation.
  • Log in to a network from a Windows 95 workstation.
  • Display the network resources by using the Network Neighborhood icon.
  • Install Netscape Navigator on a workstation by using Winsetup.exe.

Unit 3: NetWare User Object Access

  • Identify the functions of a user object.
  • Identify the utilities provided by NetWare 5 to create a user object.
  • Create a user object by using NetWare Administrator.
  • Create a template object by using NetWare Administrator.
  • Create a user object by using a template object.
  • Create a user object by using the ConsoleOne utility.

  • Set the properties of a user object by using NetWare Administrator.

Unit 4: License and Security

  • Identify characteristics of license objects.
  • Interpret license information of a NetWare 5 server.
  • Assign license units to users in a NetWare network by using NetWare Administrator.
  • Install additional licenses for users in the NDS tree by using NetWare administrator.
  • Identify the types of network security provided by NetWare 5.
  • Complete a flowchart of the login process in a NetWare 5 network.
  • Access the appropriate option for a given user account restriction task.
  • Set restrictions on a user account by using the password properties.
  • Establish intruder detection for users in a container by using NetWare Administrator.
  • Identify the guarantees of the authentication process provided by NetWare 5 login security.
  • Create a user object with default login security restrictions by using a template object.

Minimum Requirements

The CDROM version of this course requires:

  • At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
  • At least 8MB RAM.
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
  • At least a double speed CDROM drive.
  • An MPC compliant sound card with attached speakers or headphones is recommended (Currently only the CDROM version supports audio).
The network version of this course requires:
  • At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
  • At least 8MB RAM and 22MB available hard disk space or file server space.
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
