Students should have completed the NetWare 5 Administration series (82301-05) prior to taking this course and the first part of this series (course 82311). Participants should also have a basic understanding of personal computers operating systems and network technology as well as experience with DOS and a working knowledge of Windows 95 or Windows NT. This course series is an approved study guide that will help certification candidates prepare for exam 50-640 and is equivalent to Novell class 570.

Objective

  • Set up network printing by defining Novell Directory Services (NDS) printing objects.
  • Bring up a print server.
  • Connect a printer to a network.
  • Design and set up both Novell's traditional filing system and a volume using Novell Storage Services (NSS).
  • Modify parameters to optimize network performance.

Topics Include

Unit 1: Queue-Based Network Printing

  • Identify the tasks to set up queue-based printing.
  • Perform the steps to create a print queue object.
  • Perform the steps to create a printer object.
  • Perform the steps to create a print server object.
  • Perform the steps to set up print services objects using the Quick Setup option.
  • Identify the console command used to activate the print server.
  • Perform the step to connect a printer attached to a NetWare server other than the print server.
  • Identify the ways to control print queue work flow.
  • Identify ways print jobs in the print queue can be managed.
  • Perform the steps to add a user to the printer object's Notify list.
  • Perform the steps to make a user a print server operator.
  • Identify the printing capabilities granted to different types of users.

Unit 2: Network File Systems

  • Identify the guidelines that should be followed when planning NetWare volumes.
  • Match the system-created directories with their purposes.
  • Identify directory types that can be used to organize individual files in the directory structure.
  • Identify the advantages and disadvantages of a one-volume directory structure.
  • Identify the advantages of Novell Storage Services (NSS).
  • Match these NSS concepts with their own functions: provider consumer and storage.
  • Perform the steps to scan hard drives for free space.
  • Perform the steps to assign a consumer to free space on hard drives.
  • Perform the steps to create a NSS volume.

Unit 3: Optimizing the Network and Server

  • Identify the task performed by the memory allocation function used by the NetWare memory management architecture.
  • Identify issues to be considered when utilizing virtual memory and swap files.
  • Perform the steps to create and configure a server to use virtual memory utilizing swap files.
  • Perform the steps to create and remove protected memory blocks.
