This is the first course in a three part series that instructs the learner how to use NDS health check tools to proactively maintain a network by performing regular system checks. The course teaches why and how to maintain server logs as well as a test environment and it introduces learners to the features of NDS and troubleshooting tactics.

Advanced NDS Tools and Diagnostics Part 1

Audience

The intended audience for this course includes End Users Technical Managers System Administrators Software Engineers Network Administrators and Help Desk/Support. This course is for NetWare 4 or NetWare 5 CNEs Master CNEs CNIs or experienced NDS administrators that have NetWare 4 or NetWare 5 CNE level experience. Learners should be CNE candidates or technical support personnel responsible for diagnosing and resolving problems with NetWare networks. Participants should have an understanding of (or experience with) personal computers operating systems and network technology; experience with DOS; a working knowledge of Windows 95 or Windows NT Workstation; and experience using NetWare.

Objective

  • Identify the features of NDS 8 and upgrade to NDS 8.
  • Identify the frequency of performing NDS health checks and the prerequisite steps to perform the NDS health checks.
  • Perform the basic NDS health checks.
  • Perform complete NDS health checks automate the process of performing NDS health checks and create server logs and an NDS test lab environment for maintaining NDS health.
  • Troubleshoot NDS issues.

Unit 1: NDS 8: An Introduction

  • Identify the situations where the features of NDS 8 are used.
  • Identify the features of ConsoleOne.
  • Complete the steps to prepare a NetWare server for an upgrade to NDS 8.
  • Identify the steps to complete the installation process of NDS upgrade.
  • Identify the steps to complete the upgrade process of NDS 8.

Unit 2: NDS Health Checks

  • Identify the frequency of performing NDS health checks.
  • Identify the prerequisite steps to perform NDS health checks.
  • Identify the structure of an NDS tree that conforms to the guidelines for preparing an NDS tree structure.
  • Identify the uses of a physical layout diagram of a network.
  • Check the NDS version by using the NDS Manager utility.
  • Identify the steps to check the NDS version by using the DS DIAGNOSTICS utility.
  • Check NDS time synchronization by using the DSREPAIR utility.
  • Check NDS partition continuity by using the NDS Manager utility.
  • Identify the commands to check NDS partition continuity by using the DSTRACE utility.

Unit 3: NDS Health Checks: Advanced Activities

  • Identify the commands that check external references by using DSREPAIR and DSTRACE utilities.
  • Identify the commands used to purge obituaries by using the DSTRACE utility.
  • Identify the commands used to check remote server IDs.
  • Check an NDS tree for unknown NDS objects by using NetWare Administrator.
  • Identify the commands used to check an NDS schema by using the DSTRACE utility.
  • Identify the steps to create a report of background processes by using the DS DIAGNOSTICS utility.
  • Match the commands used to check NDS background processes with the situations in which they are used.
  • Complete the diagram that represents the steps to install the CRON utility.
  • Identify the commands to be used in a Crontab file.
  • Identify the information to be recorded on a server log.
  • Identify the activities that conform to the guidelines for creating an NDS test lab environment.

Unit 4: NDS Issues: Troubleshooting

  • Identify the activities performed in an NDS troubleshooting step.
  • Identify the NDS troubleshooting utility used to perform the activities in a specified troubleshooting step.
  • Identify the tasks to be performed using the DSREPAIR utility.
  • Identify the tasks to be performed using the DSBROWSE utility.
  • Identify the tasks to repair a replica by using the NDS Manager utility.
  • Identify the tasks to repair critical NDS objects by using the NDS Manager utility.
  • Resolve issues in an NDS tree.

Minimum Requirements

The CDROM version of this course requires:

  • At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
  • At least 8MB RAM.
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
  • At least a double speed CDROM drive.
  • An MPC compliant sound card with attached speakers or headphones is recommended (Currently only the CDROM version supports audio).
The network version of this course requires:
  • At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
  • At least 8MB RAM and 22MB available hard disk space or file server space.
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
