Description

This course is part of a series on Netscape Servers. This course begins with an overview of Directory Server and Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP). Next, the functions, filters, attributes, and customization of the HTML Gateway is covered. Finally, students will learn about LDAP client development in Java.

Audience

The intended audience for this course is developers and corporate IT personnel who wish to learn about Netscape Directory Server and how to LDAP enable applications. This course assumes prior knowledge of Internet standards and Web technologies including: Web application development, forms-based Web applications, CGI, Java or C/C++, and relational database technology. In addition, participants should have taken Introduction to Netscape Servers (course 85511).

Objective

  • Identify the problems associated with duplicate application data in a network.
  • Identify the way Netscape Directory Server solves the problems associated with duplicate application data in a network.
  • Understand how the functions, filters and attributes, and customization of the HTML Gateway can be accomplished.
  • Create and modify various clients using LDAP SDK for Java.

Unit 1: Directory Server and LDAP Overview

  • Identify the characteristics of an Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) directory service.
  • Select the characteristics of Netscape Directory Server architecture.
  • Match the data planning activity with its description.
  • Match the design focus area with the design task.
  • Match the object class concepts of Netscape Directory Server with their definitions.
  • Identify the considerations for performing a phased deployment of a directory service.
  • Identify how supplier and consumer servers support replication.
  • Perform the steps to configure a server for directory tree replication.

Unit 2: HTML Gateway

  • Perform the steps to add an additional document directory.
  • Perform the steps to add a CGI directory using Enterprise Server.

  • Perform the steps to add an entry to a directory.
  • Perform the steps to replace an attribute value for an entry in a directory.
  • Perform the steps to write a client that compares a specified value against an entry's attribute.

Minimum Requirements

The CDROM version of this course requires:

  • At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
  • At least 8MB RAM.
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
  • At least a double speed CDROM drive.
  • An MPC compliant sound card with attached speakers or headphones is recommended (Currently, only the CDROM version supports audio).
The network version of this course requires:
  • At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
  • At least 8MB RAM and XXMB available hard disk space or file server space.
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
