Audience

This course addresses the requirements of application developers and Web designers who need to design and develop applications and applets by using Java. An important objective is to prepare the learners for the Sun Certified Programmer for the Java 2 Platform - Exam (310-025).

Prerequisites

The audience for this course should be familiar with the following topics: Object-Oriented and Event-driven programming concepts. Internet basics such as browsers and HTML fundamentals. Knowledge of content covered in earlier courses in this series: Introduction to Java 2.

Objective

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

  • Identify the width in bits the minimum and maximum values and the default values for the three main categories of primitive data types: integral floating-point and boolean
  • Identify keywords and identifiers provided by Java
  • Declare constants variables and literal values for String and all primitive types by using all permitted formats bases and representations
  • State the effect of using a variable of any kind when no explicit assignment has been made to it
  • Determine the result of applying increment/decrement arithmetic extended arithmetic (*= /= += -=) relational conditional bit-wise and assignment operators or a combination of these on operands of any type
  • State the order of evaluation in an expression that involves operators and the result of the expression
  • Write code using selection statements such as if and switch and iteration statements such as while do while and for and identify legal argument types for these statements
  • Write code using all forms of loops including labeled and unlabeled use of break and continue and state the values taken by loop control variables during and after loop execution
  • Write code that declares constructs and initializes arrays of any base type single or multidimensional using any of the permitted forms both for declaration and for initialization
  • State the effect of using an array element of any kind when no explicit assignement has been made to it
  • Topics Include
