OS 390 MVS ESA Fundamentals of VSAM Part II

MVS TSO/ISPF

Serebra Learning Corporation
Training Provided by Serebra Learning Corporation This course explains how VSAM adds and deletes records to and from a KSDS. It describes how VSAM manages the space within the data components of the KSDS when it performs additions or deletions. Also covered is the organization and function of an alternate index, how and when an alternate index can be used, and how an alternate index relates to an existing ESDS or KSDS. It describes the role that catalogs play in maintaining and accessing VSAM datasets. It reviews the basic concepts of a catalog and shows how catalogs are used to locate and access a VSAM dataset. The course discusses master catalogs and user catalogs their uses, similarities and differences, examines the system datasets that are used to support the catalog facility and describes various ways to identify the catalog in which a dataset is described. It also explains how to use IDCAMS to create a KSDS file statement that defines a VSAM file and how to process a KSDS file. This course is designed for operators with previous JES2 experience

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • identify three ways that free space comes to exist in the data component of a KSDS
  • demonstrate how VSAM processes a KSDS when asked to add or delete a record randomly
  • describe the processing performed by VSAM during a control interval split
  • describe the processing performed by VSAM during a control area split
  • describe the effects of too much and too little free space
  • determine whether the dataset should be defined with no free space, a minimal amount of free space, or a large amount of free space, given the description of a KSDS application
  • illustrate the physical organization of an alternate index
  • identify the different ways that a base cluster can be accessed through an alternate index
  • identify appropriate applications for an alternate index
