This course provides a foundation in the deployment, use, and application of Java in the OS/390 environment. The course begins with a review of the history and architecture of Java and the OS/390 platform. The course also covers OS/390 client-server application architectures and how the Java can be used within an implementation strategy. Thin and thick Java applications are also discussed in this course. In addition, the course covers the considerations of using the JDK on OS/390, including facets of using the AWT under X-Windows; character set considerations, and the Java Native Interface. The course also describes various Java integrated development environments (IDE) which can be used to develop applications on workstations for later deployment in the OS/390 environment. Finally, the course introduces several of the latest Java server-side technologies available under the WebSphere Application Server for OS/390. These include Servlets, Java Server Pages (JSP), and Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB).
