Supervision is defined as management by overseeing the performance or operation of a person or group . Therefore it is a portion of the management process. Within the learning organization (Senge 1995) supervision becomes important for learning and performance (the two being considered as integrally linked). The rapid and accelerating changes occurring in society create high demands on the education system. More importantly these changes place incredible levels of stress on the people working within educational settings. The need for effective supervision increases proportionally.

Superior Supervision Skills
The coaching approach toward supervision is steadily gaining support within all types of organizations. Part of the reason for this is that it is based on respect for the employee and belief in their ability to learn and grow. Another factor is that although this approach requires greater investment in time initially, in the long run it saves supervisors vast amounts of time, energy, and aggravation.
The supervisors task is simple to get the job done and grow their staff. Time and cost pressures, limit the latter. The coaching approach achieves both.
There are seven essential elements of the coaching approach:
q Ability to create a positive relationship with the coachee
q Provide positive constructive feedback
q Elicit the coachees perspective
q Re-Frame the issue
q Help the coachee solve the problem for themselves
q Help plan the action steps and make a mutual commitment to follow-up
q Hold the coachee accountable in a systematic way
Delivery Time: 15 hours

q A set of exercises that can be used to build coaching capacity
q Gained skills to increase the problem-solving capacity of their coachees

q Strategies for overcoming barriers to coaching
A coaching approach to supervision has the potential to:
q Improve employee retention
q Improve relationships between supervisors and rest of team
q Reduce problems requiring disciplinary action
q Provide team members with skills they need to develop their full potential
q Allow supervisors to focus on the positive & on longer term goal-setting
q Set a pattern for quality of relationship with students
q Encourage supervisors & team members to grow personally
Based on the theory that lasting behavioral change can only happen with change in awareness, and that changes in awareness happen primarily through caring relationships. The coaching process in a workplace, devoted to learning, has an added benefit. By modeling caring relationships, supervisors encourage team members to establish similarly caring relationships with the customer / client base.
