ITS252 - Linux System Administration
Course description
The Linux System Administration course will teach you to perform many aspects of Linux system administration.
Linux System Administrators are required to configure and maintain the operating system environment as well as support user needs. Students will learn to perform multiple installations on x86 based computers, creating file systems, backing up and restoring file systems, creating user and group accounts, assigning permissions, kernel configuration, updating and installing virus protection software. The focus in this course is on generic command based administration that can be easily transferred to many distributions of Linux or Unix.
Who should attend System administrators, analysts or programmers who need to expand their knowledge base to administration tasks on the system.
Prerequisites
A basic working knowledge of UNIX or Linux commands.
ITS251 - Introduction to Shell Scripting course is recommended.
What you will learn
- Installation Options
Learn the various installation scenarios, create a multiboot installation environment
Configuring the boot environment
Examining the initialization process, Modifying the boot process, Creating login scripts
Creating Users and Groups Examining user configuration files, Creating user accounts, Identifying specific user and group ids, Assigning passwords
Examining System Processes Monitoring system activity, Configuring background and foreground tasks, Killing processes, Assigning priorities to processes
Creating and Maintaining Filesystems
Understand the various filesystem types supported on Linux systems, create, mount and clean filesystems, understand inodes, explore the /proc filesystem, use the more common backup utilities
Install Software patches and updates
Install virus scanning software, update operating system environment, rebuild a kernel Monitor System Performance
Become familiar with several of the performance monitoring tools, Learn strategies for maintaining high performance levels, gathering system utilization statistics Examine Characteristics of Printing and serial Devices Configure and manage printers, Set characteristics of terminals, Unlock unresponsive terminals
