This course is aimed at professionals responsible for maintaining the efficient operation of complex computer networks for example System Engineers Network Administrators or Internetwork Engineers. Cisco employees Channel Partners Resellers and customers may also take this course. It is expected that the target audience will be educated to degree level or equivalent in computer science or electrical engineering with some experience of maintaining Cisco internetworks.
Objective
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
Topics Include
Unit 1: Baseline Configuration
- Identify components of a network configuration table.
- Identify characteristics of a network topology diagram.
- Identify guidelines for discovering network configuration information.
- Identify components of an end-system network configuration table.
- Identify characteristics of an end-system network topology diagram.
- Identify commands and applications used to discover information about the network configuration of end-systems.
- Identify guidelines to discover end-system network configuration information.
- Identify guidelines for creating network and end-system network configuration documentation.
Unit 2: Troubleshooting Strategies
- Match Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) model layers with their corresponding Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model layers.
- Sequence the stages in the process of sending encapsulated data flows between end-systems.
- Match networking devices with their associated logical layers.
- Identify support resources that assist troubleshooting at the physical and data link layers.
- Identify stages of the network troubleshooting process.
- Sequence the stages to gather network symptoms.
- Identify guidelines for gathering symptoms from users.
- Sequence the stages to gather symptoms from end-systems.
- Identify approaches to troubleshooting network problems.
Unit 3: Physical and Data Link Layer Problems
- Identify symptoms of problems that occur at the physical layer.
- Identify symptoms of problems that occur at the data link layer.
- Match Cisco commands used to isolate physical and data link layer problems with their functions.
- Identify end-system commands used to isolate problems at the physical and data link layers.
- Identify guidelines for isolating problems that occur at the physical and data link layers.
- Isolate a serial interface problem.
- Isolate a frame relay problem.
- Isolate an Ethernet interface problem.
- Isolate a FastEthernet interface problem.
Unit 4: Physical and Data Link Layer Resolution
- Identify commands used to resolve problems at the physical and data link layers.
- Sequence the steps to resolve a problem at the physical and data link layers.
- Sequence the steps to resolve a serial interface problem involving an inactive interface on a router.
- Sequence the steps to resolve a frame relay problem involving an incorrect Local Management Interface (LMI) type.
- Sequence the steps to resolve an Ethernet interface problem involving an incorrectly seated cable.
