Audience

Professionals who want to learn or improve their business writing skills. Course Prerequisites: The Grammar Skills series will provide professionals with the necessary skills to write and communicate using proper grammar. This 3-part series is an "upgrade" to the current BPD Grammar Skills Series.

Objective

Upon completion of this course the student will learn:

  • To identify guidelines for using appropriate words when writing.
  • To identify types of words to avoid when writing.
  • To identify rules for using commas.
  • To identify guidelines for using semicolons.
  • To identify guidelines for using colons.
  • To identify features of synonyms and antonyms.
  • To identify correct uses of homonyms.
  • To match commonly misused words with their descriptions.
  • To identify guidelines for attaching prefixes and suffixes to words.
  • To identify spelling guidelines.

Unit 1: Word Choice

  • Identify guidelines for using appropriate words when writing.
  • Identify types of words to avoid when writing.

Unit 2: Punctuation and Mechanics

  • Identify rules for using commas.
  • Identify guidelines for using semicolons.
  • Identify guidelines for using colons.
  • Identify guidelines for using dashes and hyphens.
  • Distinguish between parentheses and brackets.
  • Identify guidelines for using apostrophes.
  • Identify guidelines for using end punctuation marks.
  • Identify guidelines for using quotation marks.
  • Identify guidelines for using ellipses and italics.
  • Identify guidelines for writing numbers correctly.
  • Identify rules for using capitals.

Unit 3: Synonyms Antonyms and Homonyms

  • Identify features of synonyms and antonyms.
  • Identify correct uses of homonyms.

Unit 4: Misused and Misspelled Words

  • Match commonly misused words with their descriptions.
  • Identify guidelines for attaching prefixes and suffixes to words.
  • Identify spelling guidelines.

Minimum Requirements

The CDROM version of this course requires:

  • At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
  • At least 8MB RAM.
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
  • At least a double speed CDROM drive.
  • An MPC compliant sound card with attached speakers or headphones is recommended (Currently only the CDROM version supports audio).
The network version of this course requires:
  • At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
  • At least 8MB RAM and 22MB available hard disk space or file server space.
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
