UNC101 - Introduction to Uncertainty Concepts.
The purpose of this class is to serve as a introduction to the concept of
uncertainty, and a foundation upon which the remaining uncertainty courses
are based. When this course is completed the student should understand:
- the concept of "true value" and "conventional true value"
- the concept of "error" and what might be called "conventional error"
- the difference between absolute and relative uncertainty
- the difference between accuracy and precision
- what are the international standards concerning uncertainty and meaurement
- in general terms what is meant be the word "uncertainty"
- Understand the sigma and pi notation for sums and products
- the following concepts from mathematics (required for uncertainty analysis)
- Statistic
- Arithmetic Mean
- Weighted Mean
- Variance and Standard Deviation
- Random Variable
- Expectation
- the difference between type A and type B uncertainties
