Introduction to Uncertainty Concepts
UNC101 - Introduction to Uncertainty Concepts. The purpose of this class is to serve as a introduction to the concept of uncertainty, and a foundation upon which the remaining uncertainty courses are based. When this course is completed the student should understand:
  • the concept of "true value" and "conventional true value"
  • the concept of "error" and what might be called "conventional error"
  • the difference between absolute and relative uncertainty
  • the difference between accuracy and precision
  • what are the international standards concerning uncertainty and meaurement
  • in general terms what is meant be the word "uncertainty"
  • Understand the sigma and pi notation for sums and products
  • the following concepts from mathematics (required for uncertainty analysis)
    • Statistic
    • Arithmetic Mean
    • Weighted Mean
    • Variance and Standard Deviation
    • Random Variable
    • Expectation
  • the difference between type A and type B uncertainties
This class is required for all subsequent uncertainty courses.
