Primary Certificate in Rational Emotive and Cognitive Behavioural Counselling, by distance learning. This is the foundation level training for individuals who want to add a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy element to their existing counselling and therapy work.
The course will take you through the following areas of study:
a An overview of human disturbance, using anxiety as the emotion under study;
a Understanding how people disturb themselves by their beliefs and attitudes;
a The Basic Principles of Rational Emotive Behavioural Counselling;
a The ABC Model, and the core Irrational Beliefs;
a The Rational Emotive Behavioural Counselling sequence;
a The emotional barriers to self-confidence;
a How to debate, dispute and discard Irrational Beliefs, and replace them with Rational Beliefs; and:
a The Rational Emotive Behavioural Counselling Process
Course participants will study specific texts in turn, and complete three assignments. The first assignment comprises ten questions. The second and third assignments each comprise nine questions and an audio tape. The aim of the two audio tapes is to demonstrate the course participanta s ability to apply some of the basic principles of Rational Emotive Behavioural Counselling in a counselling interview with a friend, peer or client.

The Primary Certificate in REBT CBT
The course is based on two set books, and one booklet; plus three chapters of a third book. The books are by Albert Ellis PhD, the founder of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy; and Windy Dryden PhD. The booklet and the three additional chapters are by Dr Jim Byrne and provide an easy to access, comprehensive overview of the Rational Emotive Behavioural counselling process. The course will take you through the following areas of study:

Written assignments are normally submitted as email attachments. Exceptionally, they may be submitted by normal mail, by sending a stamped and self-addressed envelope for return post. Audio tapes are to be submitted, in a padded envelope, to ABC Coaching Academy, 27 Wood End, Keighley Road, Hebden Bridge, HX7 8HJ, West Yorkshire, and include a self-addressed padded envelope for its return. ( Returned tapes are a combination of student session extracts and immediate developmental feedback).
The set books costs about 18. 99 GBP (or $US36. 95), and 8. 00 GBP (or $US15), respectively; and can be bought from Amazon. com. The book titles and Amazon links are provided with the first assignment.
The total course fee, excluding the cost of the two set books, is 95 GBP; being 25. 00 GBP per module for each of the three modules, and
10 GBP per audio tape for listening to and providing audio feedback on two audio tapes, during Assignments 2 and 3. The booklets, on the use of REBC to control anxiety, and to boost self-confidence and self-acceptance, are provided as part of the course materials for the first and second modules, and are included at no extra cost.

Assignments, which comprise nine or ten questions, are usually submitted as email attachments. They are marked as quickly as possible, normally within three to six days; and returned to the participant, along with the next assignment paper (provided the appropriate fee has been received). A reasonable amount of developmental feedback is normally provided including on the audio tapes; and this varies from participant to participant, depending upon their needs. A small amount of tutorial support - of about 10 to 15 minutes per assignment - is available by email, if needed. In the case of more serious difficulties, a brief tutorial may be arranged using Instant Messaging or telephone contact.
Recent change: There are now strict deadlines for the submission of assignments, to support participants. (Not having deadlines was making it difficult for some participants to discipline themselves to get down to their studies). You will be expected to submit each assignment 28 days after receiving it. If you become ill or have a personal crisis that interferes with this submission timeframe, then you can apply for a two week extension. If you fail to submit within that timeframe, no further extensions can be arranged, unless special compassionate grounds exist.
The Primary Certificate in Rational Emotive and Cognitive Behavioural Counselling is awarded upon successful completion of the course. There are no degrees of success: just pass or fail. There is no reason why anyone should fail this course, given a reasonable level of commitment and effort, and the support of Jim Byrne.
