Testimonials from previous participants:   "It is hard to imagine that there could be a better integration of learning and relaxation  than Kevin and Eric's Personal Renaissance in Tuscany. Not only were  the accommodations perfect and the food and sightseeing flawless, but we actually took a serious  look at an often overlooked topic. I would travel with them again in a quick minute. Bravo!"     - Dr. Bernice Goodwin   "When I first saw the announcement for Eric and Kevin's Personal  Renaissance in Tuscany course, I was struck by their creativity. I also wondered if it was for real. Happily, the course was both real and creative and provided a thoroughly enjoyable immersion in not only improved self care but also in thoughtful exploration about the realities of our profession. Well done!"    -Dr. Deborah Weisinger

Course Rationale

Unique hazards associated with the profession of providing psychotherapy are a common experience among therapists, and can lead to distress and/or impairment.

Research demonstrates that clinicians experience distress and impairment in alarming numbers, and often do not recognize it. Educating professional therapists, along with creating preventative measures such as a structured and effective self-care plan, is one solution.

Effective self-care serves to protect both the therapist and the client by addressing sources of distress that can later become impairment. This conference is designed to be a first step in an ongoing effort to assist therapists with additional education and experience in self-care.

  • The conference frees therapists from the conditioning, daily pressures, and responsibilities of their normal working environment.
  • The retreat atmosphere encourages reflection and an in-the-moment disposition, key ingredients to increasing awareness. A fresh perspective can be gained by taking time out from our every day lives, withdrawing from society, and leaving the office.
  • Problem-solving skills are enhanced in a less structured, group setting focused on participation.
  • The conference allows therapists to examine potential areas of distress and engage in reflection and assessment in a supportive environment.
  • The goal is to develop an action plan for realizing, acknowledging, and addressing potential areas of impairment.
  • The conference provides a group experience designed to decrease isolation and serve as a foundation and model for consultative relationships in the future.
  • The curriculum takes a positive position regarding the issue of self-care, encouraging intrapersonal development, interpersonal relationships and assistance, professional development, and physical and recreational activities. These components comprise a comprehensive, structured plan.
