Training Provided by Serebra Learning Corporation

In this WestNet e-Learning module, we will use the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model to explain the specific technologies and protocols used in most local area networks (LANs). More specifically, you will learn about the popular LAN protocols of Ethernet and Token Ring, and the increasingly important technology of wireless networking. We will start low in the OSI protocol stack, and then work our way up to higher layers of LAN networking protocols and software.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Describe what medium access control means, and why it is important
  • Describe the two main approaches to medium access control
  • Name the corporations and organizations that played key roles in the development of today s LAN protocols
  • Describe a collision
  • Explain how Ethernet controls each node s access to the physical medium
  • Describe common Ethernet configurations
  • Explain the basics of Token Ring medium access and operation
  • Describe how Token Ring medium access differs from Ethernet
  • Describe common Token Ring configurations
  • Explain key differences between Token Ring and Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) (pronounced fiddee ) networksM
  • Explain the difference between CSMA/CD and CSMA/CA
  • Describe the hidden node problem, and show how CSMA/CA solves itExplain the difference between wireless LANs based on the 802.11a and 802.
