This WestNet e-Learning module reviews connection-oriented switched services commonly used to move information across a wide area. These services include Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), frame relay, and X.25.
Although we refer to this unit as Higher-Layer WAN Protocols, these protocols are essentially Data Link Layer protocols. However, these protocols go beyond simple link connectivity by providing connection services across an entire WAN, normally across multiple links. It is for this reason that we refer to them as higherlayer protocols

Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:Describe ISDN services Identify the differences between ISDN-Basic Rate Interface (ISDN-BRI) and ISDN-Primary Rate Interface (ISDN-PRI) services Name the protocol layers of ISDN Explain the functions of each layer of the ISDN protocol stack Describe the different methods that devices use to interface to an ISDN network Describe how PCs and telephones can connect to an ISDN network Explain how ISDN might be used to provide remote networking connectivity and redundancy Describe the basic operation of frame relay Explain how frame relay uses virtual circuits to move information across a network Describe how frame relay uses virtual circuits to move data across a network Draw a frame relay frame encapsulating higher layers Describe the protocol header used by frame relay Describe how frame relay is typically implemented i
