This module focuses on how we interface legacy PSTN services with an H.323 network. First, we trace the steps involved in setting up and tearing down an H.323 call. Next, we explore how we can translate Signaling System 7 (SS7) interswitch signaling into packetized network traffic, carrying such advanced call features as call forwarding, calling and called party identification information, and 3-way calling. We explore how ISDN-based services, such as Digital Signaling System 1 (DSS1) and Q.SIG, enable the integration of disparate voice and messaging systems. We discuss how we interface ISDN, frame relay, and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) services with the VoIP network. We finish this module by discussing fax over IP (FoIP) services.

Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe the steps involved in establishing, enabling, and terminating an H.323 VoIP call
- Compare H.323 call progression steps with those required by H.323v2 fastStart procedures
- Explain the SS7 call signaling capabilities
- Compare and contrast SS7 protocols to the OSI Model 7 layers
- Describe the fundamental SS7 layers and their functions
- Describe how an SS7-VoIP gateway enables PSTN-VoIP integration
- Describe ISDN protocols and services
- Describe the differences between Basic and Primary Rate ISDN (PRI) services
- Explain the ISDN signaling types
- Describe the basic operation of frame relay
- Describe how frame relay uses virtual circuits to move data across a network
- Describe how frame relay is typically implemented in an enterprise network
- Explain the difference between public, private, and hybrid frame relay networks
