Audience

The course is intended for individuals working with machinery and involved in maintenance. It is also directed at those who need to prepare technical and industrial sketches.

Objective

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

  • Identify features of the English Measuring system.
  • Identify considerations for using the metric measuring system.
  • Perform conversions between English and metric systems using a conversion table or calculator.
  • Match types of rules with their features.
  • Identify features of calipers.
  • Identify features of Vernier calipers.
  • Define key concepts that relate to gauges and comparators.
  • Identify types of gauges.
  • Differentiate between types of comparative measurement devices.

Topics Include

Unit 1: Introduction to Measuring

  • Identify features of the English Measuring system.
  • Identify considerations for using the metric measuring system.
  • Perform conversions between English and metric systems using a conversion table or calculator.

Unit 2: Measuring Devices

  • Match types of rules with their features.
  • Identify features of calipers.
  • Identify features of Vernier calipers.
  • Identify considerations for using squares.
  • Match parts of the Inch micrometer with their functions.
  • Sequence steps to measure using an Inch micrometer.
  • Identify features of a Vernier micrometer.
  • Identify features of a metric micrometer.
  • Match types of micrometers with their features.
  • Match types of direct-reading and transfer-type instruments with their features.
  • Identify features of gauge blocks.
  • Match instruments used to measure heights and angles with their features.

Unit 3: Gauges and Comparative Devices

  • Define key concepts that relate to gauges and comparators.
  • Identify types of gauges.
  • Differentiate between types of comparative measurement devices.

Minimum Requirements

The CDROM version of this course requires:

  • At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
  • At least 8MB RAM.
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
  • At least a double speed CDROM drive.
  • An MPC compliant sound card with attached speakers or headphones is recommended (Currently only the CDROM version supports audio).
The network version of this course requires:
  • At least a 486DX 33Mhz CPU.
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and a Microsoft compatible mouse.
  • At least 8MB RAM and 22MB available hard disk space or file server space.
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum 512K video RAM (1MB video RAM recommended).
