Microsoft Operations Framework (MOF) is a collection of best practices principles and models. It provides comprehensive technical guidance for achieving mission-critical production system reliability availability supportability and manageability for solutions and services built on Microsoft's products and technologies.

This course Microsoft Operations Framework Essentials is an introductory two-day course designed to expose students to the three key elements of the Microsoft Operations Framework the MOF process team models and risk models. This course also helps students to understand the purpose of MOF by giving the context of its development and describing how MOF builds upon the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) to achieve its goals.

Program Outline


Module 1: Introduction to MOF

This module provides insights into the business context of and the reasons for MOF's development. It then gives a brief overview of MOF and how it approaches the challenges that faced it.

  • Describe the major challenges now facing IT.

  • Describe the MOF approach to service management.

    Module 2: Building on ITIL

    This module provides a high-level overview of the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL). ITIL is considered the most consistent and comprehensive documentation of best practice for IT service management in the world.

    After completing this module students will be able to:

  • Explain what ITIL is.

  • Describe how MOF builds on ITIL.

    Module 3: MOF Process Model

    This module presents the MOF Process Model. It provides an overview of the quadrants their associated operations management reviews (OMRs) and service management functions (SMFs). It also describes key principles and underlying concepts.

    After completing this module students will be able to:

  • Describe the basics of the MOF Process Model.

    Module 4: MOF Team Model

    This module is an overview of the MOF Team Model. It describes the principles of a successful team and shows the seven different team role clusters and their goals for success. The module also illustrates how the Team Model is connected with the Process Model and discusses the need for strong communication in a team.

  • Identify the seven MOF Team Model role clusters.

  • Describe how the MOF Team Model and the MOF Process Model are integrated.

    Module 5: MOF Risk Management Discipline

    This module provides a brief background on why operations needs risk management and why traditional risk management methods are insufficient. It explains how MOF embeds risk management in all stages in order to address these issues. It also describes the standard MOF Risk Management Discipline.

    After completing this module students will be able to:

  • Explain why the importance of risk management is increasing.

  • Explain why and how MOF embeds risk management in all SMFs roles and reviews.

    Module 6: Course Summary

    This module reviews the key concepts from the course and provides next steps and resource locations for learning more about MOF.
