Training
Provided by Compliance Solutions
The
On-Line DOT Hazardous Materials Transportation training is designed to meet the requirements for training under
49 CFR 172.704
. The purpose of this course is to ensure awareness and promote safety among
employees who may be involved in the transport of hazardous materials.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires all
persons who offer hazardous materials for shipment (including shippers) to
receive training to meet DOT's hazardous materials regulations. These
regulations require shipments of hazardous materials to be safely packaged,
labeled and accompanied with the correct paperwork.
Who Should Be Trained?
This is probably the single most
misunderstood part of the regulation and it's REALLY simple! DOT
mandates that any person who is involved in the shipment process, this includes
the administrative support personnel that generate the paperwork (manifests, bills of
lading, etc) as well as anyone who signs or accepts shipments, must be trained.
If you stop and think about it, making sure that every person that comes in
contact with a hazmat shipment, has a real
possibility of making a mistake and jeopardizing the shipment. In order to be
compliant, you must also train your your warehouse personnel who pack, ship or placard the shipments, as well as their managers and supervisors. If an employee does
not understand the regulations and makes a simple mistake in the hazard class,
or simply puts the wrong placard on the container, the shipment is compromised
throughout the entire process. Drivers who transport the shipments should have
be trained in 49 CFR 172.704 (this course) as well as receive and maintain a
separate hazmat endorsement for their Commercial Drivers License (CDL).
