Creating Leadership Presence - The Art of Group Dynamics
So much of what is available about communication deals with one-on-one interactions. When you stop to think about it a great deal of professional life involves: (1) Communicating at a group level and (2) Understanding how to be successful and effective in groups.
These are two of the most important professional skills that we can develop. Along with any information you share with someone else there is a non-verbal element. This is often referred to as the meta-message. These are tremendously important and yet receive little attention in conventional communication training. In fact, research has shown that the meta-message carries far greater influence that the verbal message.
Breathing is the most fundamental tool in creating non-verbal messages. Voice is modulated breathing. Many factors go together to create the meta-message. We have control over most of these when we choose to. Most often, we use the various elements unconsciously. Making even minor adjustments to how we use our voice can make substantial differences to communication effectiveness, especially when speaking to groups.
