This is the second course in a five part series that will provide programmers with the basic skills to build three-tier client/server solutions.
Learn To:
- Identify the features, installation requirements, constituents, supporting services and command line utilities of Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS), and the elements and views of the MTS Explorer interface.
- Manage and deploy packages in MTS.
- Implement security in MTS and SQL Server.

Unit 1: Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS)
Duration: 2 - 3 Hour(s)- Identify the features of MTS.
- Identify the system requirements for installing MTS on a computer.
- Identify the uses of constituents of MTS environment.
- Identify the functions of supporting services used by MTS.
- Enter the appropriate MTS command line utility used to perform a specified task.
- Identify the item in the MTS Explorer interface used to view specific information.
- Identify appropriate View menu items used to display information in a specific way in the MTS Explorer.
Unit 2: Maintaining Packages in MTS
Duration: 2 - 3 Hour(s)- Set up an MTS server to deploy packages by using the Action menu in the MTS Explorer.
- Create a package by using the Action menu in the MTS Explorer.
- Install a prebuilt package by using the Action menu in the MTS Explorer.
- Set the properties of a package by using the pop-up menu in the MTS Explorer.
- Identify the guidelines to package MTS components.
- Add a component to a package by using the Action menu in the MTS Explorer.
- Set the properties of a component by using pop-up menu in the MTS Explorer.
- Export a package by using the Action menu in the MTS Explorer.
- Sequence the steps that are performed by a client application executable to set up a client for using MTS components.
Unit 3: MTS and SQL Server Security
Duration: 2 Hour(s)- Identify the advantages of three-tier security.
- Sequence the steps to implement declarative security.
- Create a Windows NT user.
- Create a Windows NT local group.
- Add a user to a Window NT local group.
- Create a role for a specified package by using the MTS Explorer.
- Map a Windows NT account to a role by using the MTS Explorer.
- Assign a role to a specified MTS component.
- Enable authorization checking for an MTS component by using the pop-up menu of the component.
- Set the user identity for an MTS package.
- Lock an MTS package against a specified criterion.
- Update information in the File DSN page by using the ODBC applet.
- Set permissions for enabling a Window NT local group to access specified objects in a database.
- Assign specified permissions to a login on SQL Server.
- Grant privileges to a local group for accessing the SQL Server database.
- Test integrated security by using SQL Trace.
- Identify the guidelines to be followed for SQL Server integrated security management.
