Course Overview
This course is the first in a five-part series on Novell NetWare Service and Support. This series focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and resolution of hardware-related problems that network professionals encounter while working with a network. This course will give an overview of service and support tasks, research tools, and network cables and boards.
Learn To:
- Identify service and support tasks.
- Identify the steps of a troubleshooting model.
- Identify the guidelines for preventing Electrostatic Discharge (ESD).
- Identify the LAN information to be logged when documenting a network.
- Identify the requirements for accessing Novell Internet services.
- Access information stored in the Micro House Technical Library (MHTL).
- Troubleshoot a network problem by using the Novell Internet service site and the SupportSource CD.
- Identify the steps to install and troubleshoot network boards and cables for Ethernet and Token Ring networks.

Audience
Students should be CNE candidates or technical support personnel responsible for diagnosing and resolving problems with NetWare networks. Participants should have an understanding of (or experience with) personal computers, operating sysems, and network technology; experience with DOS; a working knowledge of Windows 95 or Windows NT Workstation; and experience using NetWare. This course series is an approved study guide that will help certification candidates prepare for exam 50-635 and is equivalent to Novell class 580.

Unit 1: Introduction to Service and Support
Duration: 3 - 4 Hour(s)- Identify service and support tasks.
- Match steps of a network troubleshooting model with the tasks performed at each step.
- Identify the functions of CheckIT5.
- Identify the information that should be recorded when documenting a LAN system.
- Identify the information to be recorded when documenting the history of a LAN.
- Identify the resource information that should be recorded when you are documenting a LAN.
Unit 2: Service and Support Research Tools
Duration: 2 Hour(s)- Identify the requirements for accessing Novell Internet services.
- Match the services provided by the technical support page with their descriptions.
- Identify the minimum recommended hardware and software requirements for executing SupportSource on a machine.
- Install SupportSource on a workstation by using the SupportSource CD.
- Match the Micro House Technical Library (MTL) sections with the information they store.
- Troubleshoot a network problem by using the SupportSource CD.
- Troubleshoot a network problem by using a research tool.
Unit 3: Network Cables and Boards
Duration: 2 Hour(s)- Identify the characteristics of the types of network cables.
- Identify the category of twisted pair cable to be used in a given network.
- Identify the coaxial cable standard to be used for a given network.
- Identify the characteristics of the types of fiber optic cables.
- Identify the appropriate network cable for a given situation.
- Identify the guidelines for using the network cable types.
- Identify the steps involved in installing a network board.
- Match the network board to be used for a given specification.
- Identify the functions of the network board configuration parameters.
- Identify the features of the various methods of configuring network boards.
