Course Overview

This course is the first in a five-part series on Novell NetWare 5 Administration. This course covers the features and functionalities of NetWare 5, Novell Directory Services (NDS), setting up a NetWare 5 workstation, user object access, licenses, and security. This course is an approved study guide that will help you prepare for certification exam 50-639 and is equivalent to Novell class 560.

This course is intended for network support professionals who plan to manage or administer networks based on NetWare 5. Students should have a basic understanding of personal computers, operating systems, and network technology; experience with DOS; and a working knowledge of Windows 95 or Windows NT Workstation. This course is also intended for students interested in gaining their Certified Novell Administrator, CNA, or Certified Novell Engineer, CNE, Certification.

Unit 1: NetWare 5 and Novell Directory Services (NDS)

Duration: 1 - 2 Hour(s)
  • Identify the basic hardware components of a network.
  • Identify the responsibilities of the network administrator in setting up network services.
  • Identify the responsibilities of a network administrator in configuring network resources.
  • Identify the types of workstations you can use to access NetWare 5.
  • Match the network services provided by a NetWare 5 server with their functions.
  • Sequence the steps involved in accessing a NDS resource.
  • Identify the benefits of NDS.
  • Match the components of a NDS Directory with their descriptions.
  • Categorize a given set of NDS tree objects.
  • Identify the appropriate NDS tree structure for a given set of NDS tree objects.
  • Identify the name of an object in a given tree structure.
  • Display the objects in a NDS tree by using the CX command.
  • Browse to an object in the NDS tree to display the details by using NetWare Administrator.
  • Identify the functionalities of different browsing features of NetWare Administrator.

Unit 2: Workstation

  • Identify the tasks that are performed by a workstation to communicate with a network.
  • Identify the functions of workstation hardware.
  • Match workstation software with its functions.
  • Sequence the steps involved in the process of dataflow between workstation hardware and workstation software.

  • Install Novell Client software on a Windows 95 workstation.
  • Log in to a network from a Windows 95 workstation.
  • Display the network resources by using the Network Neighborhood icon.
  • Install Netscape Navigator on a workstation by using Winsetup.exe.
