Course Overview

This is the first course in a two-part series on Novell NDS Design and Implementation. This series will provide the knowledge and skills necessary to create a Novell Directory Services (NDS) design and implementation strategy. This course will cover NDS design theory, designing an NDS tree, the skills needed to determine an NDS partition and replication strategy, and the skills necessary to create a time synchronization strategy.

Participants should have taken the Novell NetWare 5 Administration series (courses 82301-05) and Novell NetWare 5 Advanced Administration series (courses 82311-15) prior to taking this course. This is an approved study guide that will help you prepare for certification exam 50-634 and is equivalent to Novell class 575.

Unit 1: NDS Design Theory

• Identify why NDS design is important to the success of a network.
• Identify the tasks of personnel roles needed in NDS design.
• Identify the phases of the NDS design cycle.
• Identify the design implications of merging two companies.

Unit 2: Designing an NDS Tree

• Sequence the steps to design an NDS tree.
• Match the NDS concepts with their descriptions.
• Sequence the steps to create a naming standards document.
• Identify exceptions to using location-based design.
• Identify criteria that affect lower layer tree design.

Unit 3: NDS Partitions and Replicas

• Identify the characteristics of a partition.
• Identify the types of replicas.
• Indicate factors that affect partitions and replicas.
• Identify guidelines to determining partition boundaries.
• Identify benefits of a replica placement strategy.

Unit 4: Time Synchronization

• Identify the importance of time synchronization on a network.
• Match each IPX server type with its description.
• Identify the methods by which servers communicate.
• Identify NTP time source for IP and IPX servers.
• Identify conditions that affect planning a time synchronization strategy.
• Identify the advantages and considerations for implementing the single reference time synchronization method.
• Identify the benefits and considerations of time provider groups.
• Perform the steps to create time synchronization on the single reference and secondary servers.
