Course Overview

This is the first course in a two-part series that covers the critical skills in planning and implementing database backup and recovery strategies. This course introduces the learners to the backup and recovery goals and functions of the various structures and processes in the Oracle architecture. In addition, participants learn to manage archive processing and maintain a recovery catalog. This course also identifies the concepts associated with performing physical backups with or without Recovery Manager (RMAN).

  • Identify the features of the Oracle backup and recovery architecture.
  • Manage database archiving.
  • Maintain a recovery catalog using Recovery Manager (RMAN).
  • Display the database archive modes and identify the effects of running a database in a given archive mode.

Unit 1: Oracle Backup and Recovery Architecture

Duration: 1 - 2 Hour(s)
  • Select the backup and recovery goals of a database administrator.
  • Identify the factors to be considered when defining a backup and recovery strategy.
  • Differentiate between the user and server processes for user interaction with a database.
  • Match the key Oracle memory structures with their functions.
  • Match the functions of the key background processes with their functions.
  • Match the key Oracle server file structures with their uses.

Unit 2: Database Archiving

  • Identify the implications of operating an Oracle database in NOARCHIVELOG mode.
  • Identify the implications of operating an Oracle database in ARCHIVELOG mode.
  • Sequence the steps to change the archive mode of an Oracle database.
  • Manage the database archive process.
  • Configure the database for archiving the online redo log files by setting parameters in the init.ora file.
  • Identify the data dictionary views used to obtain the archive log information.
