Course Overview

This is the second in a two-part series based on Oracle8i Network Administration. This series introduces participants to the trends and problems associated with business networking and presents the various solutions required to address these problems. This series explains in detail the architecture of Net8 and describes the steps in which connections are established between peers. Participants will learn how to implement a basic connection between a client and a server node using various naming methods. Participants will also configure a Names server, a Multithreaded Server and Connection Manager. The different methods used to determine network problems and the security risks are also presented. Utilities such as logging, tracing, and Trace Assistant will be covered. Finally, the security solutions of the Advanced Networking Option (ANO) such as encryption and check summing are explained in detail, along with various other security solutions will be covered in this series.

Unit 1: Centralized Naming Concepts

• Match the service name resolution method with its definition.
• Identify the benefits of using the centralized naming method for name resolution.
• Sequence the steps in resolving a client request to connect to a service using Oracle Names.
• Match the Oracle Names directory object with the appropriate definition.
• Identify the features of two domain naming models.
• Sequence the steps involved in discovering a Names server on the network by an Oracle Names client.
• Sequence the events that occur when an Oracle Names client uses its cache to retrieve Names server information.

Unit 2: Oracle Names Usage and Configuration

• Identify two approaches to configuring an Oracle Names server.
• Create a Names server by using the No Region Database option in Net8 Assistant.
• Start a Names server by using Net8 Assistant.
• Configure a region database for a Names server by using Net8 Assistant.
• Add a service name to a Names server by using Net8 Assistant.
• Delete a Names server by using Net8 Assistant.
• Configure the Oracle Names client profile by using Net8 Assistant.
• Specify the preferred Names server on the Oracle Names client by using Net8 Assistant.
• Test a Names server by using Net8 Assistant.
• Identify the functions of the primary NAMESCTL commands.
• Match the additional NAMESCTL commands with their functions.
